Spring Updates from Across the GoFarm Hawaii Island Chain

Posted April 24, 2018

There is much to be grateful for as the Spring Season continues to unfold.  The rain this year has brought with it many challenges and has tested us in many ways.  It has pushed us to look for new solutions, strengthen our partnerships and practice patience. We keep rallying, surviving and thriving in our changing communities, on our growing site locations and in the fields we farm.  We are thankful to have places throughout the State to do our good work, live our good lives and work with good people.

Here are some Updates from across our GoFarm Hawaii Island Chain:

Windward Cohort 8 GRADUATED!!!

We are so proud of them and can’t wait to see what they grow next! Parade of Farms with our friends at Oahu RC&D is on May 5th, Come thru!

North Shore  AgXposure is coming to an end and we want to shout out a BIG MAHALO to all the Farms that let us learn from them in these last few weeks:)

Mohala Farms, Kahuku Farms, Kako’o Oiwi, & Counter Culture Farm YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!

AgSchool North Shore starts next week!

Kauai

Of all our islands, this Spring, Kaua’i has gotten the most drama from the heavy rains and many parts of the island have experienced traumatic flooding and damage to their homes, operations & farms.  Communities across the State have come together to provide relief, support and supplies to make sure our Kaua’i People know how much we need them.  Thankfully, Our GoFarm Kaua’i site did not sustain any major damage but keeping our seedlings alive and cleaning up the aftermath of the recent storms has kept us busy. AgSchool is still in session & our program site (weather permitting) hopes to complete an 8 acre expansion at Kaua’i Community College by the Summer.  These keiki came to visit recently and have lifted our spirits to keep us keeping on–rain or shine!

Maui

Lots of outreach on Maui has been going on as we wind down our current cohort to graduate from AgPro in May.  AgCurious is happening in June and the link to Register Now, is live.

Hawaii Island

AgCurious Recruitment continues as we gather our next round of farmers on Hawaii Island.  AgXposure plans to take off in May and we’ll keep everyone updated on what new moves we are making on island soon.

GFH AgBusiness

AgBusiness Team continues to island hop sharing knowledge and providing AgBusiness workshops across the land.  Lots of exciting things are been thought up in Agriculture today and though we have much to share we also learn so much from each community and contributor to the Ag industry in Hawaii.  We recently returned from Hawaii Island after a 2 day retreat with one of our great supporters Kamehameha Schools ‘Aina Ulu Program.  It was very fulfilling to get grounded, connect to sense of place and understand why these kinds of things are valued in the curriculum we teach and the communities we serve.

Celebrating Variety! at The Variety Showcase Goes Tropical

Posted March 16, 2018

A big, bright Mahalo to The Culinary Breeding Network for all their contributions to the Food & Farm Scene and for selecting Hawaii as their first satellite Variety Show outside of Portland.

We are very glad you decided to #GoTropical 🙂  Another grand thank you to all the Farmers, Chefs, Breeders, Teams, Talents, Creatives and Cool People that brought everything together (especially our very own Jay Bost- Captain of the Farm Nerds;). Our hearts, brains & bellies are so full.

Here’s a blurb and some pics:)

The Variety Showcase Goes Tropical 3/13
It was an exciting Celebration at The Variety Showcase Goes Tropical Event hosted by the Culinary Breeding Network & GoFarm Hawaii this March at Kapiolani Community College. An array of mind blowing crop varietals combined with culture and cuisine were brought together and blended brilliantly in bite sized tastings made by local Chefs at over 15 action stations.  Agricultural leadership on all levels and farmers on all scales attended to see what’s being conjured up in the food & farm scene for Hawaii’s future. Mahalo to all who supported the event and we hope to see everyone at the next one.
FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
If you have fear of missing out, here’s a few teasers from the event to give you an idea of what happened while you were somewhere else:)))
Let’s start with a little dessert… Daniel & Kelly’s Green Gold Avo Key Lime Pie
Gabe’s Banana Cookies & Cream
Rob & Scott’s Jicama Pancake
A little Main Dish…
Ted & Roy’s Moringa Malungay Fried Rice & Lechon Lomi
The Appetizer Type
Jim & Bryan’s MH8 Pepper Ceviche
A few Crop Varietals for your Visuals:
Carrots
Indigo Tomatoes

Blue ‘Olena
That’s all we can muster right now… It was quite the whirlwind.  If you were there you witnessed the magic, if you weren’t, click here to see all the professional photos by Photographer Shawn Linehan.
